Warner Bros. and MGM have announced that the upcoming reboot for Tomb Raider is slated for March 16, 2018. The studios are co-producing the film, which will star actress Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl, Ex Machina) as Lara Croft. THR reports that the film “…will tell the story of a young and untested Croft fighting to survive her first adventure.”

According to IGN, the film “…will serve as an origin story for Lara and draw inspiration from the latest games in Square Enix’s popular action adventure franchise.”

The film will be directed by Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug (The Wave) with Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Transformers 5) penning the script. Graham King (The Departed, Argo, World War Z) is serving as producer. Uthaug told IGN the following about the project:

“I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that’s definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well. I think we’ll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I’m hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise.”

“Raiders of the Lost Ark was one of my favorite films growing up, so it’s definitely a dream to work in that kind of genre. I think we’ll want to make it feel like a modern action movie and to make what’s going on feel like it’s going on for real.”

Lara Croft has not been brought to the big screen in more than a decade. The previous films, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, both starred actress Angelina Jolie and were based on the original Tomb Raider game that was released in the mid 90’s by video game company Eidos. The game sold over 45 million copies worldwide, and is one of the most successful games of the time. Eidos is now part of Square Enix, who handle the current game franchise.
