Should The Walking Dead fans be concerned about Michonne’s fate?

Deadline recently reported that actress Danai Gurira will appear in Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, where she’ll be making her second appearance as Okoye, who she’ll portray in the upcoming Black Panther film due out next spring. This has caused some fans to be concerned for the fate of Michonne on the upcoming season of The Walking Dead.

While there’s no saying for sure what AMC has in mind for the character going forward, it’s highly unlikely that they plan on killing her off anytime soon. Not only is she the leading lady on the series, or at the very least within the top three alongside Maggie and Carol, but her relationship with Rick and his children is crucial to the story as it advances. This is evident from the contents within The Walking Dead comics, even considering the creative choices made for the series that deviate from the source material.

More importantly, there’s no reason Gurira can’t do both projects, as they both film primarily in the state of Georgia. The majority of The Walking Dead is filmed at Raleigh Studios in Senoia, with some shoots taking place in the vicinity of Atlanta at Tyler Perry Studios. Meanwhile filming for Avengers: Infinity War is currently taking place at Pinewood Studios in Fayetteville, Georgia. The driving distance between said locations is relatively short, and would be easy enough to manage so long as scheduling isn’t a major issue.

It’s also worth noting that Danai is hardly the only cast member of The Walking Dead to work on other projects while their characters have remained alive and well on the series. Chandler Riggs (Carl Grimes), Lauren Cohan (Maggie Greene), Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon), Lennie James (Morgan Jones), Alanna Masterson (Tara Chambler), Seth Gilliam (Father Gabriel), Steven Ogg (Simon), and Steven Yeun (Glenn, prior to his character’s death) are among cast members who took on other roles without their characters being killed off.

Though some would argue that Sonequa Martin-Green’s character Sasha was killed off after signing on for a leading role in Star Trek: Discovery, according to the actress the opposite is actually true. She gave EW the following statement in an interview after her departure from The Walking Dead:

“It couldn’t have worked out more perfectly, because what was happening on Walking Dead was already underway. It was the path. It was definitely in place. And then as we were going into the very end of the season, the very end of our shoot for the season — that’s when the opportunity for Star Trek came. And so I know some people might think that I left Walking Dead to do Star Trek, but it did not happen that way. It was after Walking Dead was already ending that the opportunity for Star Trek came.”

Additionally, Gurira’s role for Infinity War is in all likelihood relatively small, as the film is expected to include an incredible amount of characters. Not only will the majority of the characters from Captain America: Civil War be appearing, but additionally Thor and Hulk will also be included following their adventures in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok. Furthermore the Guardians of the Galaxy are also making an appearance, in addition to other characters.

Though all of this indicates that fans need not be concerned about Michonne just yet, it certainly doesn’t guarantee her safety indefinitely. While her character is still alive and well in The Walking Dead comics, her television counterpart has taken on characteristics of a yet another comic character, who serves as a prominent female figure as well as Rick’s love interest. Unfortunately that character was recently killed off in the comics, so it’s arguable that this would be Michonne’s rightful death, and therefore her long term fate remains uncertain.

Season 8 of The Walking Dead airs this October on AMC.
