Sandra Bullock cast as the lead role in Netflix’s adaptation of Josh Malerman’s Bird Box
Sandra Bullock ( Miss Congeniality, Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous ) will take on the lead role in Netflix’s adaptation of Bird Box, a post-apocalyptic thriller, directed by Oscar-winning Susanne Bier ( Serena, In a Better World ) with a screenplay written by ‘The Arrival’s’ Eric Heisserer.
Production on Bird Box is planned to start this August and and will be produced by Dylan Clark, Chris Morgan and Clayton Townsend.
Based on a 2014 novel by Josh Malerman, the story is set in the near future, where a mother (Bullock) and her two young children are among a small group of survivors after a mysterious alien force has driven the world’s population to deadly violence. The three must make their way on a terrifying journey — 20 miles in a rowboat — while blindfolded, with nothing to rely on but the mother’s wits and the children’s trained ears.
Some may not agree with casting Sandra Bullock for the lead, the loss of IT director Andres Muschietti, the retention of writer Eric Heisserer, or the small screen as the right platform. At face value, all of this may end up being difficult news for die hard fans of the source material to digest.
At The Nerd Recites we want to see the Bird Box adaptation succeed, we love Malerman and we love his work, and recently some of the team shared their thoughts on how the film adaptation should be handled to remain true to Malerman’s original work.
We also recently interviewed Malerman exclusively, in which he broached the subject of this adaptation.
We’ll continue to report on news of Netflix’s adaptation of Bird Box as and when it arrives but in the mean time feel free to share your thoughts on today’s casting news with us in the comments below.
