Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra has expressed that she would love to play Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl in Joss Whedon’s upcoming solo Batgirl DCEU film.

Chopra has grown her infamy with Western audiences by playing Alex Parrish in Quantico and more recently, villain Victoria Leeds in Baywatch.

Chopra revealed her fondness for the Batgirl role in a video interview with OK! Magazine. When asked if she’d love to have one of the Batgirl, Black Cat or Silver Sable roles, Chopra stated:

There’s been a lot of chatter about a lot of films. No one’s spoken to me about it. My dream part is… if I’m working in America, I’d definitely want to do a superhero part. When I think of American movies – they’ve had superheroes for eons, right? I’d definitely want play a superhero and I’d want to have a really interesting superpower. Batgirl would be SO cool!

So it was definitely a leading question from the interviewer, but the excitement that Chopra showed at Barbara’s role in particular is interesting. And sometimes in Hollywood vocalising that you are interested in a role will get you noticed by those in charge – in this case Joss Whedon and Warner Bros.

DC’s Batgirl Rebirth is currently in full-swing.

The interviewer asked the question because she thought it would be a good opportunity for more representation in films. And this came after Chopra had spoken about how she thinks a role should be attainable by anyone, from any background, because an actor’s job is to shift to become that role.

So although Chopra would look very different from the classic Batgirl that we know, it shouldn’t be forgotten that the Batgirl mantle has already been assumed by different-looking females in the comics (Stephanie Brown was blonde, while Barbara is typically a red head).

It should also be noted that The LEGO Batman Movie already beat this idea to the punch. They cast Rosario Dawson as Barbara Gordon (right down to having an accurate LEGO skin tone) and she was great in the role.

Representation is key in this day and age, to the point where much of the audience will keenly be looking out for it. We know that Chopra has the acting chops (mainly from Quantico), so although I think there are better choices, I’d be very game to see what Chopra could do in the role.
