Prepare for Free Comic Book Day 2016

By ·May 5, 2016 6:00 am

There are few better combinations than comic books and the word ‘free’ being used in the same instance.

Saturday 7th May 2016 is Free Comic Book Day, which falls of the first Saturday of May each year.

This is a day when all participating independent comic book stores around the world will be offering (a pre-selected library of) entirely free titles to anyone who walks into their stores. Click here to locate a participating store near you.

When it comes to how many comics you are allowed to walk out with, different comic book stores have different policies on this, so please do check with your local retailer.

The free titles that are up for grabs are often #1 issues, as incentive to get people to try comic series that they might not have otherwise attempted. You can find a full list of this year’s free titles here.

It is not just physical comic book stores that are participating, but digital stores too. The site Comixology will be giving away the above list of free comics. Comixology also regularly give away their own selection of free comic books, which includes titles not available in the above list. Click here to view Comixology’s current library of free digital comic books.

Of the titles available on Free Comic Book Day, we recommend:

One-Punch Man #1 (with My Hero Academia)

It’s a daringly simple concept; one man has an ability to defeat any enemy at all in one single punch. You’d think that this silly idea would render the hero too powerful, but what we read of this was fresh and unique and we’ve heard that it only gets better.

Serenity #1 (with Hellboy and Aliens)

The TV shows Firefly and the film Serenity are so good, so who wouldn’t want to read more about Malcolm Reynolds and the crew of the Serenity? We’ll definitely be giving this a go.

DC Superhero Girls #1

We haven’t read this title, but we love our DC’s heroines here at The Nerd Recites, so any comic that features Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Harley Quinn and more, all in one narrative, is certainly something that we will be checking out and we suggest that you do too.

Suicide Squad #1

August can’t come soon enough for us – we think that David Ayer’s Suicide Squad is going to be a great film and really solid boost for the DCEU. If you’ve never read any Suicide Squad, why not begin with this title? It’s always better going into big comic book films when you have read some of the comic material beforehand.

Captain America #1 and Avengers: Civil War II #1

In the aftermath of Civil War, why not update your Captain America and Avengers knowledge by grabbing these 2016 titles? As we head towards the MCU’s Infinity War, it would be a smart move.

The worst thing that you could do would be to forget and allow Free Comic Book Day to pass you by. So set your reminders, arm your alerts, and be ready on Saturday 7th May to grab some excellent free titles, all for some exciting weekend reading.
