Pokémon GO: How to choose Pikachu as your starting Pokémon

Pokémon GO has seen unprecented success since it’s release in New Zealand and Australia on July 6th and in the USA from July 7th. It has topped the app stores for both iOS and Android, has spawned endless memes and let’s play videos and has probably done more child obesity in the last week than any other program has done in the last few years. In a similar premise to the original Game Boy games, you start out your journey as a Pokémon trainer with one of three starting Pokémon; Bulbasaur, Squirtle or Charmander.

However that all changed when Pokémon Yellow came out and you were able to start out with a Pikachu instead of one of three original starting Pokémon. It has been discovered that you can do this in Pokémon GO, screw Bulbasaur, Squirtle or Charmander when you can be the very best with your own adorable Pikachu.

To start out with Pikachu you will need to use a brand new account with Pokémon GO, you could either use a different google account or sign up for a Pokémon trainer account. This will not work on any account where you have already chosen your starting Pokémon.

Once you’re all set up with your new account, go through all of character creation options as per normal up until the point where you’re given the option of choosing one of three starting Pokémon, Bulbasaur, Squirtle or Charmander.

The crucial part here is to not choose any of the three starting Pokémon at all. I know it’s going to be hard ignoring the allure of joining the Squirtle squad but you need to be strong for to acheive the end goal of obtaining Pikachu.

Now that you’ve resisted the urge to choose one of the starting Pokémon you will need to go outside and start walking, cycling or getting in your car and driving away from Charmander and his friends. The goal here is to travel the distance required for the original starting Pokémon to respawn at your new location.

Now that you’ve had the starting Pokémon respawn once, you’ll need to do it three more times in total. So walk away some distance, wait for them to respawn at your feet, walk away again, wait for the starters to reappear at your new location, walk away for the last time and have them respawn once again.

With the final respawn you should notice something quite different and quite miraculous. Instead of just the original three starters, Bulbasaur, Squirtle or Charmander at your feet you will notice a fourth Pokémon has now joined the party. That’s right, it’s Pikachu!

All you need to do now is tap on Pikachu, throw a pokéball at his head to catch him and voilà you can now start your Pokémon GO adventure with your very own Pikachu.

You too can be the very best, just like Ash Ketchum. All that’s left to do is find your very own Gary Oak to compete against. Perhaps you could avoid being a dick and not killing Gary’s Raticate this time around, he didn’t take it very well in the past.
