Last week in film: War for the Planet of the Apes, Ant-Man and The Wasp, Captain Marvel, The Dark Tower, and Jigsaw
The past week has been surprisingly quiet for film related news, as it seems most studios are holding out for San Diego Comic Con for their big announcements. However we do have the following updates:
New Planet of the Apes recap ahead of the third installment, casting news for Marvel’s Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel, and a new posters for Sony’s The Dark Tower and Lionsgate’s Jigsaw.
New War for the Planet of the Apes featurette recaps previous installments
A new featurette has been released by 20th Century Fox that recaps previous installments of their Planet of the Apes franchise ahead of War for the Planet of the Apes hitting theatres next week. The film is directed by Matt Reeves from a screenplay co-written with Mark Bomback and stars Andy Serkis, Judy Greer, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Karin Konoval, Amiah Miller, and Terry Notary. The official plot synopsis:
Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.
War for the Planet of the Apes will release on July 14th, 2017.

Ant-Man and The Wasp casting news
According to Deadline, Marvel’s Ant-Man and The Wasp has cast Randall Park (Snatched, The House), though which character he will portray has yet to be revealed. Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, and Michael Pena are all expected to reprise their roles from the original. Kevin Feige is producing, with Peyton Reed is returning to direct the sequel, and Rudd and Gabriel Ferrari writing the script. Plot details are unknown at this time.
Ant-Man and The Wasp will be in theatres on on July 6, 2018.
Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury to appear in Captain Marvel
Deadline are reporting that Samuel L. Jackson is expected to reprise his role as Nick Fury in Marvel Studios upcoming Captain Marvel film. The film is to be be directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and stars Brie Larson (Room) in the leading role. Ahead of her feature film, Larson’s character is expected make her first appearance in the MCU in Avengers: Infinity War due out next spring. Plot details are unknown at this time.
Captain Marvel arrives in theatres on March 8, 2019.
The Dark Tower new poster
Sony Pictures have released a new poster for The Dark Tower. The film is a sequel to the Stephen King book series of the same name featuring The Gunslinger, Jake Chambers, and The Man in Black characters.
Directed by Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair), The Dark Tower stars Idris Elba (Luther, Thor, The Jungle Book) as The Gunslinger (aka Roland Deschain), Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar, Dallas Buyers Club, Mud) as The Man in Black, Tom Taylor (The Last Kingdom) as Jake Chambers, Fran Kranz (Cabin in the Woods, Donnie Darko) as Pimli, Katheryn Winnick (Vikings) as Laurie Chambers, and Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen, Preacher) as Sayre. The plot reads as follows:
The Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, roams an Old West-like landscape where “the world has moved on” in pursuit of the man in black. Also searching for the fabled Dark Tower, in the hopes that reaching it will preserve his dying world.
The Dark Tower releases on July 28th 2017.
Jigsaw poster revealed
A new poster for Jigsaw was posted on the official facebook page for the franchise. The film is set in the cinematic universe created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell that began with Saw (2003) and serves as a sequel of sorts. Jigsaw is directed by Michael and Peter Spierig (Predestination, Daybreakers, Undead) from a screenplay by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger (Piranha 3D, Sorority Row). Mark Burg, Gregg Hoffman, and Oren Koules are all returning as producers.
The cast includes Mandela Van Peebles (Roots), Laura Vandervoort (Smallville, Bitten), Callum Keith Rennie (The Man in the High Castle, Longmire, Californication), Hannah Emily Anderson (Reign, Girls Night Out), and Brittany Allen (Girl in the Box), among others. Tobin Bell is also expected to reprise his role as John Kramer, aka Jigsaw.
Jigsaw opens in theatres on October 27th, 2017.
