Universal pictures have released the first trailer for their upcoming fantasy film, The Great Wall, and it’s remarkably intriguing. The Great Wall tells the story of an elite force of warriors making a last stand for humaity on the world’s most iconic structure.

As you’ll see in the trailer furtherdown the Great Wall of China wasn’t just built to keep out invading barbarians as it is in our timeline, no, it’s to keep out monsters. We are only treated to a very brief glimpse of the monsters in the trailer but given Chinese lore, tradition and the fact that there is a considerable amount of fire in the battle scenes, my money is on the monsters being dragons or fire-breathing lizards.

Matt Damon takes the lead role in the film with Zhang Yimou directing. Zhang Yimou is known for his breathtaking visual style which is evident in his earlier films such as Hero and House of Flying Daggers. This is also the first English language film for Yimou and the largest film to ever be shot entirely in China.

Without a doubt this film is likely to attract claims of whitewashing. In a film set in China that’s also entirely filmed in China, featuring China’s greatest landmark and (presumably) based on Chinese lore, you’d expect to see a Chinese lead, right? But as you’ve seen in the above trailer this simply isn’t the case, for some unknown reason Matt Damon is the lead in this predominantly Chinese film. I have no quarrels with Matt Damon as an actor, he was exceptional in Team America, but given the backlash around whitewashing in Hollywood over the last few years, it does strike me as an incredibly “bold” casting choice in this day and age.

The Great Wall will be released in 3D by Universal pictures and will hit UK cinemas on the 24th February 2017.
