Entertainment Weekly have revealed a first look image for Taika Waititi’s upcoming Thor: Ragnarok. Given that the film is due this October, content such as this from Marvel is overdue and a welcome sight. Prior to this we have had two comedy shorts from director Taika Waititi, which are superb, but given that they are sketches, they reveal nothing at all about the film itself other than the fact that Taika will bring his unique and quirky style to the film.

The image shows not only a cropped-hair look for Thor himself, but also what Cate Blanchett’s Goddess of Death, Hela, will look like, as well as Tessa Thompson’s (Westworld) Valkyrie. Additionally EW have released more images from the film, revealing new Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, among others. We’re still waiting for an official image of Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. The plot centres around Hela being accidentally unleashed from her prison and attacking Thor, which sends him to Sakaar. Hemsworth explains:

“[Sakaar is] basically where every wormhole in the universe dumps out its trash, so you get people from all walks of life with all sorts of incredible abilities and powers.”

On Sakaar Thor is forced to become a gladiator and realises that he is nothing special. This is also where we will get to see the Planet Hulk storyline play out (however deep they decide to go with it), because Hulk is the most successful and popular fighter on Sakaar.

Both the cast and Taika also mention a tonal shift for the film, which is no doubt a result of Taika’s quirky input. Taika states, however, that he is confident about the change and you can even see his style reflected a little in the font choice on the cover of EW’s issue.

Thor: Ragnarok will be released on 27th October 2017.
