Star Wars: Rebels season 3 trailer and poster
Star Wars have released the first trailer for season three of Disney XD’s Star Wars: Rebels, featuring characters both old and new from both sides of the rebellion. The new footage also confirms recent rumors that had been circulating that Grand Admiral Thrawn is appearing in this season. The Imperial villain is well known by fans of what was formerly known as the Star Wars Expanded Universe, which was declared to be non-canon by Disney and renamed Star Wars Legends, making Thrawn part of the new Star Wars canon. The character was a military commander who took control of the Imperial remnant in Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Force trilogy of novels, who is also penning a new novel based on the character, which is aptly titled Thrawn! The character is voiced by actor Lars Mikkelsen (House of Cards, Sherlock), brother of Mads Mikkelsen, who is portraying Galen Erso in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Thrawn isn’t the only new character this season, as the trailer also introduces Bendu, the large, wise creature talking to Kanan, an ancient and powerful new character voiced by classic Doctor Who actor Tom Baker. Additionally, famed Rebel X-Wing pilot Wedge Antilles will be making his appearance on the show.

The trailer indicates that there has been a time jump, showing an older and more powerful looking Ezra. He’s also upgraded his former custom lightsaber-meets-blaster and is now wielding a green saber. Like many jedi before him, our young hero is lured toward the dark side of the force, saying he wants to become more powerful. However, he seems to be well intended, indicating that there may be secretes that they can learn from the sith that will help destroy them, and we will likely see him conflicted.
The footage also puts heavy focus on Sabine, revealing that her Mandalorian roots will be further explored. Darth Maul is also present, and will no doubt play an important role.
Many fans are left wondering about the fate of fan favorite Ahsoka Tano, who was last seen in the season two finale in a lightsaber duel with her former master, Darth Vader. If she survived the battle, many hope that she will join the rebels and aid in destroying the Empire. Likewise, if she met her end, there is still hope that she could appear to Ezra as a Force ghost. Though there were no hints in the new footage, these are questions that will hopefully be addressed in the new season.
Star Wars: Rebels season 3 will debut this fall on Disney XD.
